Have you ever heard Life Changes by Thomas Rhett? If not, you should totally listen to it. It's easily one of my favorite songs at the moment. Not only does it have a good beat, the lyrics are great too. This is the chorus: "Ain't it funny how life changes. You wake up, ain't nothing the same and life changes. You can't stop it, just hop on the train, and, you never know what's gonna happen. You make your plans and you hear God laughing." Isn't that great?
My favorite line of the whole song is "you make your plans and you hear God laughing." I love this line, because of the amount of truth that's in it. We can make all the plans we want, but that doesn't mean they'll happen. That also doesn't mean that our plan is the same as God's. We can make plans about where we'll go to college, where we'll live, who we'll marry, etc. However, our plans won't always line up with God's. Proverbs 19:21 reads, "You can make many plans, but the Lord's purpose will prevail." God's plan for us will always be greater, despite what we think. Before we were even born, God had a plan for us. Here’s the thing, we’re humans. We are bound to make mistakes. That’s inevitable. However, despite our mistakes and bad choices, everything will work out according to God's perfect will.
Another line of the chorus is, "you never know what's gonna happen." HOW TRUE IS THAT? Not knowing exactly what the plan for our life is can be so frustrating at times. We literally never know what's going to happen. Trusting God without seeing solutions is hard, but that's the fertile soil where faith grows. Trusting God and having faith is one of the most important things we can learn to do. When something goes wrong, we need to accept that it's part of God's plan and something good will come out of it. We need to learn to relax and take a step back. To always remember that "everything happens for a reason," no matter how cheesy that sounds. The sad truth is that when we make decisions of our own, we miss other opportunities God has in store for us. We need to learn how to rest and just be faithful. We also need to learn to never doubt God. "Sometimes we have to experience things we don't understand just so God can bring us to the place where He needs us to be. Never doubt the season that God has you in." A good song to listen to when struggling with the idea of faith is Trust In You by Lauren Daigle. "When you don't part the water I wish I could walk through, when you don't give the answer as I cry out to you, I will trust in you."
In all seriousness, shouldn't we be thankful we aren't the ones in complete control of our lives? Shouldn't we be glad that the Creator of everything is in control of our life? What a hot mess that would be, if we got to make everything exactly how we wanted it. We should take comfort in knowing God knows what's going to happen in our life. Personally, I'd much rather let God take total control over everything in my life, rather than me trying to control it. When we try to take control of our lives, things don't always end well. Yes, we get to make choices. However, ultimately, God is the one that plans and executes everything.
